Zeina Barakeh is a multidisciplinary artist based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her artwork examines how people and spaces become polarized as a result of binary divisions. Through animation, digital media, and archival installations, she interrogates constructions of identity, history, memory, and territory. 

Barakeh’s Holy Land (2019) prints combine stills from her animations Homeland Insecurity (2016) and Slam Bang Blue (2018), which interrogate the legacy of war, the history of colonialism, and the rise of the American military industrial complex, particularly as it continues to shape geopolitics in North Africa and West Asia. The prints are annotated with passages from the US Department of Defense Law of War Manual.

Barakeh’s work has been featured in many exhibitions and film festivals around the world including at Pro Arts Gallery and Commons, Oakland; San Francisco Center for the Book; the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco; ZAZ Corner Billboard, Times Square; Minnesota Street Project, San Francisco; The Center for Book Arts, New York; MOCA Yinchuan, China; Newport Art Museum, Rhode Island; San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art. She is the recipient of numerous residency awards including Perspectives: Here and There, Brodsky Center for Innovative Editions, Rutgers University, New Jersey; and Vermont Studio Center. Barakeh currently serves as Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs at San Francisco Art Institute.
