Sepideh Salehi is a multidisciplinary Iranian artist whose paintings, photography and collages reflect her experience of creating and living in the West. In her work, including this series “Invisible Memories,” she weaves together personal experiences and cultural history that recollect growing up in post-1979 Tehran. This collage diptych, which bears the same name as the series, explores the internal parts of one’s self that are invisible to those around us, such as our memories, places that hold power over us and future visions for our life. Salehi began this project while in quarantine, and her grappling with uncertainty, isolation and nostalgia are manifested through the fantastical quality of her collage. With her inclusion of blue skies, the affectionate wrapping of arms and the division of self, she imagines an alternate world of peace beyond war and without a virus.
After receiving a BA in English Language and Translation from University of Azad, Tehran in 1998, Salehi left Iran to attend Accademia di belle Arti in Florence Italy where she received her MFA in Visual Art and Multimedia (2005). She has exhibited internationally, including participating in an exhibition of Iranian women artists titled A Bridge Between You and Everything curated by Shirin Neshat at High Line Nine, NYC (2019) and Mirrored Re-Collection at Stamp Gallery at the University of Maryland College Park, College Park, MD (2018). She also exhibits regularly through Advocartsy, a Los Angeles based visual arts platform specializing in Iranian contemporary art.
