Alia and Maitha Damithan are multimedia artists who use their collective graphic design backgrounds to create simple yet playful examinations of the everyday. Through the exploration of their limited surroundings during quarantine, a state typically marked by fear and grief, they highlight sources of hope, growth and encouragement. In Still, the interior and exterior world bleed together as greenery bursts from an open window and a fluttering bird lands by a wooden chair. The motion of the bird represents a restless excitement to return to a new normal and a life that exists outside of a few limited interior spaces. Address: Home uses the motif of an envelope to bridge the intimate with the global by highlighting still remaining, yet limited, means of communication. While still quarantined in isolation, the artists express a hope for the future as they challenge the viewer to find inspiration from the limitation of our homes.
Alia and Maitha Damithan graduated from Zayed University in 2019 with BA degrees in Art and Design and a specialization in graphic design. The twins have joined together as an artistic team and have participated in the exhibition Plastic at Tashkeel Galleryin Dubai. Together they challenge traditional medium boundaries by conflating painting, video, and design to convey their unique perspective. Alia and Maitha Damithan are part of Hamzat Wasl Studio, a creative community collective.
