Asim Ahmed is a visual artist who often uses the medium of photography to reflect on his experience living within a conflict zone. The Homesick series was created while being forced to remain at home during quarantine, a concept that is familiar to those living in Yemen due to constant warfare. The homesickness this project references is not missing one’s home because of being absent, but rather from being a stranger in one's own country and for longing for a sense of safety and security that has been lost due to war. Nevertheless, the nostalgia imbued in this image is met with a parallel sense of anticipation. In the image, women stand in a decimated interior, once a sanctuary for familiar routines, and gaze out symmetric open windows. Trapped by a war that has gone on too long, the women’s quarantine from Covid-19 is an experience they are all too familiar with.
In addition to his own projects, Ahmed is a content creator for social media and is a film production assistant for Adenium, based in Aden, Yemen. He has been featured in ArtNews, i-D and Hypebeast and has participated in exhibits internationally, including Turning On the Light at Arsheef Gallery, Yemen (2020). He received a BA in International Business Management while living in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
