Since moving to Germany, Azzam has explored a new technique in paper-collage in which he uses up to 50,000 shreds of hand-painted paper, arranged in several layers to create a new image. His fragmented compositions highlight the physical remnants of conflict and showcase the importance of rebuilding and creating from destruction.
Azzam received his artistic training from the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Damascus with a concentration in oil painting. In 2013, he was forced to leave his studio in Syria and began creating digital photomontages in Dubai. Azzam relocated to Germany in 2016 to begin a residency at the Institute of Advanced Studies in Delmenhorst. He has exhibited internationally and participated in many large-scale art fairs, including the Vancouver Biennale, where he was in residence, (2014) and FotoFest Biennial, Houston (2014).
