Born in Hama, Azza Abo Rebieh is a multimedia artist and printmaker whose monochromatic etchings tell the story of human survival. Detained in Damascus in 2015, her prints depict scenes of fellow prisoners during the Syrian war, which she has mentally captured and then reproduced as documentation of her memories. These images are especially potent when understood within the context of her release from prison and exile.
Abo Rebieh obtained a degree in Printmaking from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Damascus University in 2002. Graduating with accolades in printmaking, her thesis project won a prize at the Ostrobothnian Museum, Youth Engravers Competition in Vaasa-Finland. Abo Rebieh’s work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Drawing Center, NY (2020), and her work is in private collections and public institutions such as The British Museum. She has won several awards for her work, including the first prize in the Annual Youth Exhibition in Damascus 2006 and the third prize in Colour of Damascus 2005, Italy, curated by The European Commission Delegation.
