Jamal AlYousif’s art focuses on socially-conscious sculptures that center around the human condition.
AlYousif portays three different faces in his piece, titled, the Faces, which explores human connection and introspection with reduced semi-abstract forms. The transparent medium reveals essential truths about human relationships. Two merged faces represent communion, while a third isolated face suggests the loneliness of inner lives. His other piece, Protection, is a visual metaphor that explores human limitations in safeguarding what we hold dear. Protection juxtaposes steel and glass to contemplate the illusion of safety. The permeable steel shell shields a smooth glass sphere, evoking our desire to protect the precious and in this case, the pearl: Bahrain’s national treasure.
AlYousif studied engineering and sculpture at Cogswell Polytechnical School and the College of Marin in San Francisco, USA before returning to Bahrain to establish his design practice. AlYousif is known for executing exhibition and spatial design projects internationally, including in Paris, Doha, Kuwait, and at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
