Marianne Fahmy lives and works in Alexandria, Egypt. She works with installation and film to explore potential scenarios related to people, architecture, and language as a way to understand the constantly changing surroundings in her city, Alexandria, which faces growing environmental threats due to climate change.
With a focus on the potential for devastating flooding of the Nile Delta in the future, she has produced a series of works that go back to the history of water and its relation to the notion of nationalism. Here, Fahmy takes us below the city of Alexandria to a buried civilization lost due to strong tidal waves. The artwork responds to studies predicting the drowning of the Nile Delta. The work imagines a future map of the Delta that is yet to exist, in the process attempting to find alternative representations of geographical areas.
In 2021 Fahmy received the Prince Claus Seeds Award. Her work was part of the 7th Yokohama triennial, Manifesta 13th 2020, the Mediterranean Biennale Italy 2020, Havana Biennale 2019, Dakar Biennale in 2018 and Towner Biennale UK, MAGA Museum of Contemporary art Italy, Bozar Brussels, Warwick art Center UK, Lois & Richard Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art Ohio. Her films were screened at Kino der Kunst film festival in Munich, Nurnberg Contemporary Art Museum Germany, CIC
Cairo, Postmasters Gallery New York, Bozar Brussels and Sharjah film Platform.
Her work is acquired by Frac Bretagne Rennes. Fahmy earned her BA in Painting before studying at Mass Alexandria independent art program in 2016.
