Fethi Sahraoui

Fethi Sahraoui is an Algerian photographer whose work sheds light on collective social and cultural experiences in Algeria, with a focus on inclusion and exclusion in social space. Sahraoui’s featured series, Stadiumphilia, is about that which the stadium contains, on both the affective and visceral levels of male experience. Football is wildly popular in Algerian culture. In recent years, football stadiums have become one of the only places outside of religious services where large crowds are permitted to congregate for hours in public. Sahraoui is especially interested in unaccompanied minors, who are usually barred from entrance to the stadium but come anyway, cheering from beyond its walls if they fail to find a way past the guards.

Sahraoui’s work has been exhibited at The Arab World Institute, Paris, and featured in Tribe magazine and The New York Times among others. He is a Magnum Foundation fellow and was a participant in the last edition of The Joop Swart Masterclass. Sahraoui is also a member of the 220Collective, a group of ten photographers based in different parts of Algeria, who share the desire to share the stories and other perspectives of what Algeria is today.
