Oroubah Dieb is a visual artist living in Paris after escaping war in Syria. Her art often confronts issues of exile and the status of refugees, focusing in particular on women and children. Displacement I and IIspeak to the traumatic displacement of the Syrian people due to the war that ripped their country apart. This is a topic that the artist has experienced personally, as she had to flee her home like millions of other Syrians. The people in the paintings are burdened with this endless pain, walking with heaviness and great sorrow, and are haunted by the memories of loved ones they left behind.
Continuous Displacement represents the pouches that many Syrians refugees use to carry the possessions they salvaged after displacement. This work was made to honor the people that the artist met while volunteering in Syrian refugee camps in Lebanon. They spoke to her about their lives back home and about their imminent return to their villages and lands beyond the border.
Dieb graduated from the Institute of Practical Arts in Damascus in 1991 and has lived and worked in France since 2016. She has exhibited in the International Women Film Festival of Créteil, the Cité Internationale des Arts for the festival Visions of Exile 2018 and at the Pavillon Carré de Baudouin for the festival Visions of Exile 2020. She has been a member of the agency of artists in exile since 2017.
